December Citrus Lane review (3-month-old box)

My December Citrus Lane box for Graham came early this month, which was great because I was really hoping to get it before Christmas. It normally arrives anywhere between the 17th and 22nd of the month, and I think they are getting faster now that they are shipping with FedEx instead of their previous shipping partner.
I always look forward to the December edition of my Citrus Lane box because I figure they will do something extra special for the holidays. I was really pleased with Graham's box. This month's Citrus Lane boxes contained great brands like Pearhead, North American Bear Co., Melissa and Doug, Barefoot Books, HABA, and Episencial.
Here are the details on what we received in our box for our three-month-old son:
  • Cozie from North American Bear Co. ($10.00): This super soft lovey is so cute. I don't know if Graham will become attached to a lovey because Owen never did so we'll have to see. I really like this one though and think its really adorable and perfectly sized for my little guy. It's also machine washable which is great since I'm sure it will get chewed on and dirty. I got the Flatocow version, but there are tons more on their website where they sell them as two-packs for $20.
  • Rira Clutching Toy from HABA ($9.49): I really like the HABA brand and this toy is no exception. I love that it is wooden and colorful and unlike any other baby toy that we have. This will definitely be going in Graham's stocking this year. HABA is a German company that makes wooden toys out of reforested timber. The wood is stained instead of painted so it won't flake off and is nontoxic for babies who teethe on them.
  • Handprint Keepsake from Pearhead ($14.95): I think that Citrus Lane sent these out last year to the under one age group too. I am really happy to get it this year because I have been the typical parent of a second child who does way less with the second kid than the first. We have tons of keepsakes from Owen's first Christmas, but haven't done much of anything with Graham. He is at a different age from Owen so he can't do as much, but I really wanted to do some type of handprint or footprint artwork with him. The homemade ornament similar to this that I did with Owen when he was a baby didn't work very well and one of them broke so I'm happy to have a foolproof kit to make the process easier this time.
  • Snuggly Lotion from Episencial ($4): I really like this brand and am always happy to see it in my Citrus Lane box. I really love the cherry scent and knowing that the lotion is organic and contains nourishing and hydrating ingredients like borage seed oil, avocado, flax oil, and primrose oil.
The retail value of this box is $38.44, which is more than $15 over what I paid for it since I subscribe for six months at a time and get these boxes monthly for $21 rather than the $25 if you pay monthly. It also came with a discounted offer to become a Barefoot Books member who can sell them.
If you are interested in signing up for Citrus Lane, you can use this LINK to get $10 when you start a subscription. It's my favorite subscription box for babies and toddlers from newborns to age 5. They have introduced us to a lot of great brands and products and are a fun treat to get in the mail each month.

Citrus Lane review (August 24-month-old boy and newborn box)

My August Citrus Lane box for Owen came on Monday and I wanted to share all the great products that came inside. This box was one one of the best I have received this year. Baby brother's box also appeared at our doorstep and I will review his box at the end of the post. This month we received both a box for a 24-month-old toddler boy and a newborn baby boy. The box was Back to School themed with the hopes of helping your children "play to learn."
I opened Owen' s box during naptime because I was hoping to find some items to put aside for after the baby is born so Owen has some new things to play with. I was also able to squirrel away the food item so he wouldn't demand to eat it immediately. So that's why there are no photos of Owen opening his box this month.
Here are the details on what we received in our box for our 27-month-old son (though I aged him down to 24 months this month in hopes of getting toys he could use right away):
    • Barefoot Books Bear On the Go First Puzzles ($12.99): This is a really cute set of four four-piece puzzles featuring Bear from the Bear book series from Barefoot Books. They are a little advanced for Owen at the moment, but I am sure he will master it in the next couple months and it's good for him to have a challenge.
    • Farber Castell Fun Things to Color A to Z ($7.99): I am so excited to have a coloring book for Owen. I am saving this for some after brother is born special mommy and Owen bonding time. Each page features a different drawing of something that begins with that letter of the alphabet. Which is great for Owen because he is all about the alphabet right now and what words start with what letter.
    • Ouchies Jr. Bandages ($5.00): Thankfully Owen doesn't hurt himself too often, and in those cases it's generally a bump or bruise, but having some bandages on hand for that inevitable event is great. These are so cute. Owen has no clue who Paddington Bear is, but he is a pretty cute little teddy bear and I think he will like them for that reason alone.
    • Clean Well All Natural Hand Sanitizing Wipes ($5.50): I love Clean Well products. I have never bought them myself, but I have gotten them a couple times before in my Citrus Lane box. This is a new item though and I figure they will come in handy. I actually got two because one came in the baby's box as well so I might keep one in the car and one in the house. They smell really good too.
    • Annie's Cheddar Bunnies pouch ($1): Owen already loves Annie's Cheddar Bunnies so we're not discovering a new product or anything, but it will be nice to have this pouch to give him sometime when we need a snack on the go.
    • Fab Kids Free Outfit Offer ($39.95): This offer is for a free outfit from the subscription kid's clothes company. To redeem this code you have to sign up for their subscription and agree to be charged each month unless you decide to skip receiving an outfit for that month. You can also cancel if you don't want to remain a subscriber, but I have heard they don't make it easy on you to do this. I haven't decided if I will redeem this or not. I am not generally a fan of "free" offers that require you to sign up for a service, but at least this one features some cute outfits.

My verdict on Owen's box? It was one of my favorite boxes we've received all year. I love getting items that Owen can play with and learn from. Particularly books and puzzles. He still loves to play with the last puzzle they sent. And I was also pleased that we got a full-size body care product which hasn't happened as much recently.
The retail value of this box is about $72.43, though that's if you count the $39.95 FabKids code, which you wouldn't if you don't use it or if you are already a member since it's for first time customers. The value of Citrus Lane's boxes are always more compared to the price you pay for the items and this box was particularly good. Without the FabKids code, the value of the box is $32.48, which is more than $10 over what I paid for it since I subscribe for six months at a time and get these boxes monthly for $21 rather than the $25 if you pay monthly.

And here is what came in baby brother's newborn box:

    • Barefoot Books "Cleo's Alphabet" board book ($6.99): I love getting books in my subscription boxes for the boys. I would be happy to get a book every month. We really love Barefoot Books and actually Owen totally loves this book. He knows his alphabet now and we've been working on teaching him about the different sounds that the letters make and this book features a different item that begins with the letter on each page so it goes right along with what we've been teaching him. And it's just a really cute book in general. I kind-of want to order the Cleo's Colors book to go with it and just might since a 20 percent off code was included on my box insert.
    • Rich Frog Little Stacker ($12.95): Stackers are such a common baby toy, but because this one is animal shaped and soft fabric as opposed to plastic or wood, it's completely different from all the other ones we already have. We got the lion, which is super cute, but they also have it in a frog, rabbit, monkey, and maybe one other version. The ring piece fits around the bottom piece and the top one velcros on.
    • Organic Socks from iPlay ($5.50): These little socks are so cute and soft. And you can never have too many pairs of baby socks. Older infants received the same box with the exception of getting a sippy cup holder instead of the socks. I prefer the socks.
    • CleanWell Hand Sanitizing Wipes ($5.50): We got these in Owen's box too and I'm happy to have two canisters.
    • Weleda Diaper Cream Samples and Fab Kids offer: I am a little bummed about receiving samples of this instead of a tube because I never seem to actually use samples. They just get tossed into a basket in the linen closet and hang out there forever. And the FabKids offer is kind-of weird since the smallest size they offer is size 2 so the baby couldn't wear it for a long time. Also, I don't think it would allow you to redeem two vouchers under the same name and e-mail address anyway.
The retail value of this box is about $30.94. I didn't count the samples because I have no idea their value or the FabKids offer because I can't redeem two of them and because the smallest size they offer is size 2 and the baby won't be that size for years.

If you would like to try Citrus Lane, you can use the code TAKEHALF to receive half off your first month in a month-by-month subscription (making your first month $12.50). Multi-month subscriptions are already discounted and there are currently no coupon codes for a discount on those. Though, if you sign up using a referral link, you will receive a $10 credit in your account. You can find my referral HERE if you wish to use it. I really love Citrus Lane and highly recommend it. I already can't wait for next month!

Citrus Lane review (June newborn box)

Our Citrus Lane newborn box for little brother showed up a couple days ago and I wanted to share what was inside because I haven't seen many online reviews of newborn boxes. Like Owen's box, it was a really light and the contents were sparse, but I was still pretty happy with everything we received.
Here is what we received inside:
    • Sun Protection Hat from iPlay ($15.00 ): A Citrus Lane favorite! We love iPlay's Sun Protection Hats for their adorable design and because they provide  the maximum protection from the harmful rays of the sun. Even if your little one is wearing sunscreen, dermatologists recommend wearing a hat whenever possible. Made from UV-protective fabric that's rated 50 SPF, the wide brim provides allover coverage to shield delicate skin and prevent sun damage, while the microfiber fabric helps keep kiddos cool. We also received a sun hat in Owen's box, but I like the pattern of this one even better. It is so stinkin' cute! The only thing I'm worried about it that it is 0-6 months size and by the time the baby would be out in the summertime it will be next year most likely and he will be older than six months. We'll see. These do seem to run large.

    • Odd Duck from Boon ($8.49): Not your average rubber ducky - the Odd Duck from Boon has a unique shape, large size, and bright colors that set it apart from other duckies. A perfect water toy, they're great fun not matter what time of year it is - use them in the pool or at the beach when the weather is warm, and in the bath during the winter months, season after season. Designed to not hold water, you won't have to worry about mold accumulating inside. Free from PVC, BPA, and phthalates. This ducky is so cute and I'm especially excited about the part where it doesn't get water in it so that it gets all moldy and gross. At some point, I've had to throw away certain bath toys of Owen's because they get all yucky and start squirting mold and slimy scum into the bath water.

    • Foot Therapy Cream and Sampling Kit from Susan Brown's Baby ($20.00)We know that running around to care for a new baby isn't easy - especially on your feet - so we're pampering you this month with Susan Brown's Baby Foot Therapy Cream. Their foot Therapy Cream's rich, hydrating formula contains botanical moisturizers to help relieve overstressed tootsies. We also included a couple of items from the baby line to try on your little one. Enjoy! This lotion is more expensive than I would spend on any lotion so it must be good, right? It is a nice large size though and I'm happy to get something for pampering me that isn't edible. Lately I've gotten a lot of food items in the "mom gift" category and I am not a fan. Unless they start sending chocolate. Too bad getting this lotion doesn't ensure that my husband will actually start rubbing my feet.

    • Baby Laundry Detergent from Dropps ($0.65): Made especially for sensitive types, this laundry detergent is incredibly gentle on delicate skin, yet tough enough to handle all the mess (and odors) babies dish out. Free from dyes and enzymes, Dropps Baby pacs contain an innovative formula that leaves clothes amazingly soft, itch-free, and super clean.  These seem nice and are convenient, but getting just two pacs was kind-of a bummer. I've already used both of them. I was especially disappointed because I looked online and a 20 pac pouch is less than $7 on Amazon so I don't think it would have been too crazy to give subscribers a full-sized pouch. My kiddo's clothes do seem nicely cleaned, but because it doesn't have a scent, they just smelled like nothing, which I guess is a good thing.

This month, the newborn box retailed for about $44.14, which is almost $20 over the cost of the box. This is a great value for all the items inside, which we found to all be useful and interesting. Citrus Lane claims to contain 4-5 full sized products in their boxes. Although our total value was good, we only received three full-sized products and then the three samples.
For those of you not familiar with Citrus Lane, it is a subscription box company that offers a monthly box of (generally) 4 to 5 full-sized products tailored to your child's age and gender for newborns to age 5. Boxes cost $25 a month, but currently, new members can save $10 on a subscription if they sign up through a referral link from someone who is already a Citrus Lane member. The Citrus Lane member will also receive a $10 credit. My referral link can be found HERE. Additionally, the coupon code TAKEHALF can get you half off your first month's box if you want to do a monthly subscription where you are charged each month. According to Citrus Lane's Facebook page, there is currently no discount code for a longer subscription other than using a referral link to sign up (though those subscriptions are already discounted some to reward people for ordering a longer term subscription).
Do you subscribe to Citrus Lane? What did you think about the June boxes?

    Citrus Lane review (June box)

My June Citrus Lane box for Owen came really early this month and I wanted to share all the fun products that came inside. Baby brother's box hasn't appeared at our doorstep yet, but hopefully we will get it soon. This month we will receive both a box for a 26-month-old toddler boy and a newborn baby boy. The box was definitely summer-themed and had some cute and useful stuff included.
Here's the description from the insert provided in the boxes: "Summer is upon us so this month we've picked items to prepare you for a season of fun in the sun. Whether your plans include spending time at the bead, pool, or park, you'll be ready with the essentials - protection from the sun, a sand toy, and something for your little artist to draw with outdoors. Here comes the sun!"
Owen came running to open his box once I showed it to him. He really loves pulling everything out of the box and knows that its especially for him.

And here are the details on what we received in our box for our 26-month-old son:
    • Sun Protection Hat from iPlay ($15.00): A Citrus Lane favorite! I think this hat is so cute and I'm really happy with the pattern that we received. The hat is size 2-4 years so it's kind-of big for Owen, but that just means we will be able to use it for a long time. Owen is not a big fan of wearing hats and it's pretty hard to get him to keep one on, but maybe if he's outside playing, he will forget it is on and wear it.
    • Sand Toy from Haba ($5.69): Summer and sand toys go hand in hand. That's why we are so excited to send you one of our favorite finds from the German toy company Haba. Winners of nearly every German and American toy award around, these toys are great fun no matter what time of year it is -use them in the pool or at the beach when the weather is warm and in the bath when it's cold outside. Made in Germany from PVC-free plastic. We received the castle gate sand mold. We don't have a sandbox or a trip to the beach planned for the summer so this isn't super useful to us at the moment. But it is really well-made sturdy plastic and I figure we can use it sometime. In the meantime, it makes a great castle for playing with.

    • Dot to Dot Chalks from Alex Toys ($2.95): These playful polka-dotted chalk sticks are not your average sidewalk chalks. We love the holder, which helps to protect chalk from drops and breaks and helps keep hands clean. Our little product testers loved taking the chalk in and out of the holder almost as much as coloring with it! Fun for drawing on sidewalks, chalkboards, or construction paper. Owen really enjoys sidewalk chalk. Granted, he would rather boss me around and tell me what to draw and with what color, but he still has fun when we draw on our driveway. These will definitely be used and I'm interested to see how well the holder works. It seems like a great idea. I hate the feeling of chalk on my hands.
    •  Sunny Sunscreen SPF 35 from Episencial ($15 for 2.7 ounces): Summer is here and it's time to play outside! We understand the challenge of finding a sunscreen that's both effective and safe. Rest assured, your little one is protected from the harmful UV rays with Episencial's Sunny Sunscreen. Made for sensitive skin using minerals instead of harsh chemicals, it moisturizes while it protects. Naturally water-resistant for up to 80 minutes of sprinkler-proof fun. I am always on the lookout for baby-friendly sunscreen. We typically use The Honest Company sunscreen, but I have heard good things about this brand as well. The tube we received is smaller than the one that they sell on the website at 1.5 ounces. So the total retail value of it would be somewhere around $7.50.
Citrus Lane has also recently been offering add-on products for purchase to some of their subscribers each month. Of the four months they have been doing it, I have been offered the opportunity to add to my box two of those months. This month subscribers had the option of purchasing extra products from the company Episencial. I bought a bottle of Playful Wash and a bottle of Snuggly Lotion. The prices aren't discounted, but you basically receive free shipping since they are included in your box for that month. I really love the add-on option and think it's a fun way to pad my box a little and receive a little more product to try.
My verdict on Owen's box? Pretty good, though I do miss the months where I used to receive five items in my box and the retail value seems a bit low. But overall, I liked the products I received and am happy with the brands they selected. I don't remember having seen Haba or Alex Toys in their boxes before and I am glad to see iPlay and Episencial again.
The retail value of this box is about $31.14, a little more than $5 higher than the cost of the box, which is typically $25 (though I paid a bit less because I purchased a multi-month subscription which is discounted.) The value of Citrus Lane's boxes are always more compared to the price you pay for the items, but I have noticed their overall value has decreased in the year that I have subscribed. Still, I hardly ever have a month where I didn't use everything in the box and I always feel like I'm getting good value for what I spend.
I have really loved Citrus Lane and highly recommend it over other similar subscription boxes.

    Citrus Lane review (May box)

My May Citrus Lane boxes came on Saturday and I wanted to share all the fun products that came inside. I was really excited this month because I signed up for a second subscription so we could get a box for our baby-to-be too. So this month we received both a box for a 25-month-old toddler boy and a newborn baby boy. We were so happy with both boxes this month and we really excited with everything we received. There were lots of things to play with this month which always makes us happy and a "mom" gift in each box. Citrus Lane continues to be my favorite subscription box because I am hardly disappointed with what we receive and everything is always useful or fun. Or both!
Here's the description from the insert provided in the boxes: "We are super excited about this month's box, which includes some of our community's favorites brands! We love Barefoot Books at every age - from the beginning of life babies who love to hear you read to them, around a year they'll start trying to help you turn the page, and before you know it your child will be reading to you! We also love how Green Toys has something fantastic for every age of childhood - from teethers to stackers to vehicles and imaginary play. And in honor of Mother's Day, we're sending you a special treat for Mom. Happy Mother's Day from Citrus Lane!"
Owen had a blast as usual opening his box and pulling out all the items. Though he was so excited about the first item (a book) that we had to prompt him to keep looking because he just wanted to read the book instead.

And here are the details on what we received in our box for our 25-month-old son (scroll down to see our newborn box):
    • Journey Home from Grandpa's Book and CD set from Barefoot Books ($9.99): In this I-Spy journey home from Grandpa's house, your little one will be introduced to colors, modes of transportation, and music through various landscapes. Our moms and babies loved the book and CD set that we sent earlier this year, so we're super excited to send a new set to you. We always value the opportunity to partner with Barefoot Books, a company that believes in empowering children through the love of reading. I cannot begin to describe to you how excited Owen was to see this book in his box. After we got Barefoot Books' "The Animal Boogie" in a previous box, we looked up several of their other songs on Youtube and played them for Owen. This one happens to be his favorite. He even began singing the song a little when we pulled the book out of the box and started flipping through the pages. They could not have sent a more perfect book for him from this company. I think we read it about 10 times the day we got it.
    • Submarine from Green Toys ($14.99): This toy sub is a fantastic addition to the Green Toys line of bath toys. Made in the USA entirely from 100 percent recycled milk jugs, it features a spinning rear propeller, a flat bottom for stable water play and a wide-mouth opening for scoop-and-pour action. The cabin opens for air drying between baths, and the entire submarine can be run through the dishwasher to safely rid mold and mildew. We were really excited to receive this product. We have several other Green Toys products and we really enjoy them all. And because bath time is such a fun time with Owen, I know this will only add to it. We have the tugboat bath toy, but this one seems even cooler with the moving propeller. Owen really digs it and for some reason calls it his "acki-eeda." At least that's what it sounds like he's saying.
    • Happy Munchies Rice Cakes from Happy Family ($3.19 on Amazon): A new snack from Happy Family! It can be a challenge to find healthy snacks that appeal to your entire family. But these tasty organic rice cakes are just right for all ages, from teething babies who are just learning how to eat with their fingers to older kids looking for a crunchy snack. USDA-certified organic and gluten-free. I don't typically buy these kinds of snacks for Owen because they can be a little pricey and hard to find where I live, but I gave these to him to try and he really liked them. We asked him, "Are they crunchy?" And he replied, "No, they're good." I gave one a taste too and they are pretty yummy.
    •  Moisture Stick from Deep Steep ($5.95): We thought this product was so unique and useful! This multipurpose stick - small enough to toss in your purse - is a great alternative to lotions. Formulated to melt on contact with heat from your skin, it glides on easily and hydrates with coconut oil to prevent flaking, while preventing premature aging. Never tested on animals, it's also free from parabens, sodium lauryl sulfate, mineral oil, and fragrances. I enjoy getting a mom gift every now and then and I was actually pretty excited to see this particular product because many people got it in their Stork Stack box this month, while I received a snack bar instead. (Bummer!) I am really interested to try this because applying lotion can get pretty messy and this seems like a great alternative because you can just dab it on where you need a little extra moisture.

My verdict on Owen's box? A home-run for sure! The book alone almost makes the whole thing worth it because he loves it so very much. The retail value of this box is $34.12, about $10 higher than the cost of the box (though I paid a bit less because I purchased a multi-month subscription which is discounted.) The value of Citrus Lane's boxes are always pretty good compared to the price you pay for the items. And since I have never had a month where I didn't use everything in the box, I always feel like I'm getting good value for what I spend.
Our newborn box for little brother was great too. Here's a photo of all our goodies and a list of what came inside:

    • Rattle Keys from Green Toys ($7.99): A new launch from Green Toys for Spring 2013! We love this adorable set of rattle keys. Unlike other play keys, these are made in the USA from 100 percent recycled plastic milk jugs. With rounded edges and plenty of textures to soothe sore gums, these four "keys" provide clean, eco-friendly teething relief. BPA, phthalates and PVC free, just toss them in the dishwasher for safe, easy cleaning. I am super excited about this toy for our baby-boy-t0-be. We had a set of the traditional keys for Owen, but these seem so much nicer and I love that they can be sanitized in the dishwasher. How awesome is that?
    • "Bear Takes a Trip" from Barefoot Books ($6.99): From the best-selling series of books chronicling the adventures of Bear, this book follows Bear on his exciting journey to the mountains. Our babies loved the Bear adventures we sent earlier this year, so we're excited to send another story from the series. Again, we are never sorry to see books in our Citrus Lane boxes and a new book for little brother is great. Especially because it has yet to be torn apart or chewed on and bent like many of the other books he will inherit from his big brother. Owen is a major book lover, but he can be a little hard on them. This one is super colorful and cute.
    • The Mommy Hook ($9.99): A Citrus Lane Award finalist! Many moms consider the Mommy Hook an indispensible essential. Made from lightweight, heavy-duty aluminum with rubber guides to keep it from sliding. It accommodates bags of every sort, from diaper bags to shopping to camera, plus purses, clothing, and anything else you can hang. It hooks on virtually any stroller handle and you can even use it on a shopping cart. I have never seen or tried this before, but I think with the amount of baby stuff that I carry about to double, this should certainly come in handy. We'll see if it's as essential as some moms claim it to be!
    • Travel Size Dish Liquid from Dapple ($1.99): A Citrus Lane favorite, you'll be amazed at how well this soap works to get your baby's feeding items clean, while feeling great about the simple, all-natural ingredients. It took two moms, several experienced pediatricians, and a team of seasoned green chemists to create Dapple - a company that offers a full line of cleaners made for homes with young children. I have received samples of this dish liquid in several subscriptions boxes over time and can't remember actually ever using it. I never knew that the company made other products so I think it would actually be pretty prudent of them to send out samples of some of their other products. Actually now that I think of it, we may have gotten a sample of their detergent before too. Nevermind.
    • Gripe Water from Mommy's Bliss ($9.34 on Amazon): There's nothing worse than an upset stomach, especially when it's your baby who's suffering. Pediatrician recommended, Gripe Water is a safe and effective all-natural herbal supplement that eases the gas and stomach pain that goes hand-in-hand with colic, hiccups, and teething. So gentle and effective, it's become the number-one natural remedy for colic and gas. Somehow I never heard about this when Owen was going through his "colic-y" stage. And we tried every remedy on the Internet. I am so happy that we got a bottle of this to try with our second baby in case we have to go through that same stage again. It will be great to be able to give it a try and see if it works without having to buy it ourselves.

This month, the newborn box retailed for $36.30, which is more than $10 over the cost of the box. This is a great value for all the items inside, which we found to all be useful and interesting. We were just as happy with our newborn box as we were with Owen's toddler box. This was a great month for Citrus Lane!
For those of you not familiar with Citrus Lane, it is a subscription box company that offers a monthly box of 4 to 5 full-sized products tailored to your child's age and gender for newborns to age 5.
