Owen is 2.5 years old!

Owen turned 2.5 years old on October 1. I haven't done monthly updates in a while, but I thought I should do one at least every six months for him now.

Eating:

Owen is a pretty good eater and will eat pretty much anything that we ask him to. He does have his toddler moments where he suddenly doesn't want to eat a food that he normally loves, but he will be back to eating them again the next day. He sometimes takes forever to eat and we wind up sitting at the dining room table for centuries. His favorite foods are fruits like bananas and apples and turkey, cheese, and pepperoni sandwiches. He also loves string cheese sticks.
Owen prays before mealtime frequently. It is really cute and brings a smile to our faces as we listen to his precious prayers. Mostly he thanks God for "Mommy, Daddy, baby brother" and then he looks around for more ideas of things to thank God for including cars, pillows, the vacuum, and my all time favorite: the breast pump. And it ends, "In His name we pray. Amen."
Feeding himself is always a messy fun experience.

Sleeping:

Owen is a great sleeper. He sleeps for a good 12 hours a night and naps once a day in the afternoon for an hour to two hours most days. He refuses to nap sometimes and is normally really grumpy and weepy in the evening because of it. He still sleeps in his crib because he has shown no interest in climbing out of it yet. We will move him to his big boy bed once we need to put Graham in the nursery. In the last few months Owen has taken to needing all three of his warm fleece blankets in bed with him at night. In the past few days, he has shown some fear of what might be in his closet. He also sometimes cries in the night because according to him, "I was crying because I wanted my mommy to come back."

Learning:

Owen loves being read to and will also spend tons of time looking through his books on his own. He has many of them memorized so it sounds like he's reading them himself. His room typically looks like a library exploded in it because of this. His favorite books at the moment are "The Lorax" and other Dr. Seuss books, "Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site," "Cleo's Alphabet Book," and pretty much any book with trains or animals.
Owen talks very well for a toddler his age and can string together sentences with many words. People constantly remark on how well he speaks for his age.
Owen can easily recognize all the letters of the alphabet and is now learning the different sounds that each letter makes and what words begin with certain letters. He frequently asks, "What does a [insert letter here] start with?" which to him means, "What words start with the letter [insert letter]?" He is learning and remembering a lot of words and what letter they begin with.
Reading can occupy Owen for long periods of time.

Playing:

Owen loves playing with all things that have wheels. He loves cars and has tons of them. He likes to talk about which cars belong to which family members and where they are driving to. Nine times out of ten, its to the grocery store to buy apples. He loves his Lightning McQueen ride-in car, but prefers to push it from behind around our yard or have us push him in it. He also likes riding in his wagon and exploring the yard.
Pushing Daddy in it is also fun.

Owen also loves putting together puzzles. He has moved on from the chunky wooden puzzles to jigsaw puzzles and puts his 12-piece puzzle together several times a day.
He likes playing pretend food and enjoys feeding me imaginary foods and pretend cooking. He also really loves helping me cook in the kitchen. I let him sit up on the counter with me and he can help stir and measure.
In this photo, Owen is helping my mom snap asparagus for dinner.

Owen likes building things with blocks and Legos, but neither hold his attention for very long.
He loves music and dancing. We have dance parties several times a week. His favorite songs of the moment are "The Fox" by Ylvis and "Roar" by Katy Perry. He also loves singing along to my CDs in the car (we do not listen to kiddo music typically) and his favorite CD right now is Imagine Dragons "Night Visions." I love hearing his little voice singing in the backseat of the car. This summer, he loved watching "So You Think You Can Dance" with us sometimes and would request to watch "The People Who Dance."
I look at this photo and see glimpses of a teenage Owen.

He is interested in all the baby paraphernalia and wants to sit in the bouncer seat or Rock and Play and lie down on the playmat. I also catch him trying to put his brother's pacifiers in his mouth since he doesn't remember ever using them himself and finds them fascinating.
I can't lay Graham down on the play mat without Owen joining him.

Owen, like most kiddos, loves TV and technology. We try to limit his exposure to both. He likes to play games on my Nook, including Monkey Preschool Lunchbox and a train game that teaches his about letters. He loves watching TV, but I try to limit it to one 30-minute episode a day (though he doesn't watch every day) unless we're having a rough day or baby brother needs some extra attention and I need to keep Owen occupied and contained. He still likes Thomas the Train, but his absolute favorite TV show is Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood. After getting tired of watching and rewatching the same Thomas episodes, I let Owen watch several shows from PBS to find out what he liked best and Daniel was the winner. Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood is a great animated show based on the old show Mr Roger's Neighborhood and it teaches him lots of lessons like obeying his parents, waiting patiently, trying new foods, and not being afraid of the doctor. It has lots of cute little songs that we sing with Owen after watching the show and talk to him about what he learned.
Owen really loves going to the park and playing on the playground. He likes running up and down ramps, swinging, and going down the slide.
Owen enjoys helping me with chores around the house, like folding laundry and unloading the dishwasher. He also likes to help me with stuffing his cloth diapers and throwing them in the laundry basket. I am trying my best while he is young and doesn't see it as work to teach him to help around the house. For now, he thinks we're playing.
I don't have the heart to tell him that this isn't exactly helpful.

We took Owen to his first movie in a movie theater in August and he had a great time. We took him to see Planes as a special treat before his brother was born. I definitely recommend going to an early matinee because there are tons of kids there and people don't mind if your kid talks a little. Though Owen was pretty quiet and sat through the entire thing in either Tim's or my lap.
My handsome boys.

Owen became a big brother in August and is doing a great job adjusting. He loves his brother and wants to hold him or kiss him a lot. He also makes shushing noises when Graham cries or brings me his pacifier.
Brotherly love is so sweet.

Other Things I Want to Remember:

Owen wears size 5 diapers when he is in disposables. He loves wearing cloth diapers and enjoys picking out which diaper he wants to wear next. Potty training is still not happening. Not while we have a newborn and Owen also still shows no interest in using the toilet or even telling me when he has used the bathroom in his diaper.
He is wearing 18-24 month and size 2T clothing. Size 2T is still pretty big on him in most brands and I have to roll up the sleeves and pant legs, but I feel silly buying the smaller size in winter clothes since hopefully he will be able to wear the 2T size later in the winter. Baby Gap size 2T actually fits him the best of most of the brands I have tried out.
He is wearing size 7.5 and size 8 shoes.
We are working on obedience still (obviously this in an ongoing lesson). Lately when I ask him to do something that he doesn't want to do he will say, "Mommy, don't say [insert whatever I'm asking him to do.]" He doesn't really say "No" to things. For a little while there when he wanted to do something that he knows he shouldn't do he would ask us to leave the room.
Isn't he such a handsome boy?

Owen is 24 months (two years!) old!

According to the doctor, Owen weighs 27.4 pounds and is 33 inches tall. He's still our little guy and doesn't seem to be putting on much weight. I know he is growing taller though, but the earlier measurements must not have been quite accurate and a little longer than he really was. Now that they measure him standing up (as opposed to lying down), the measurements should be more accurate. Otherwise, the doctor was quite impressed with Owen's intellectual development. To put it in perspective, at age two a pediatrician would expect a toddler to be able to put two words together to communicate. Owen is already speaking in full sentences of as many as eight words. Owen was being pretty quiet while the doctor was talking explaining this and I said," He's doing great." And the doctor then mentioned something about three-year-olds putting three words together and then all of a sudden Owen looks across the room at some books and says, "I want to read that Elmo's Song book." And the doctor was like, "Oh okay. He's fine." We discussed potty training a little bit, but I personally feel that Owen isn't quite ready and I would rather wait and have it be less stressful an experience than try to force it right. I really feel like he will be closer to 2.5 or 3 when he is ready. We'll see.

 Eating:
  • Owen eats three meals a day and an afternoon snack normally.
  • He still eats basically whatever we eat for meals. We eat dinner together as a family and I really think that helps encourage Owen to eat pretty much anything, even vegetables like spinach or peas, etc. He is getting better at using his fork and spoon, but still needs help sometimes. He seems to eat with a spoon better with his left hand.
  • Owen's favorite foods and drinks are peanut butter sandwiches, oatmeal, cheese-flavored crackers, Chick-Fil-A chicken nuggets, lemonade, and he's a big fan of birthday cake after his birthday.
  • Owen drinks whole milk with each main meal and water in between. He is obsessed with juice and asks for it often, but we try to stick with water most of the time. Occasionally I will add some orange juice or lemonade to his water.
This is how he smells a flower.
Sleeping:
  • Owen naps in the afternoon and generally goes down just after lunch around 1 p.m and sleeps for between an hour and a half to two hours.
  • Owen goes to bed at night between 7:30 and 8 p.m.
  • He wakes up at around 8 a.m., sometimes earlier, sometimes later.
  • Owen's going to bed routine consists of a bath, pajamas, reading a few books and his storybook Bible, and then snuggling and rocking in the chair with either mommy or daddy for a few minutes before putting him in his crib.
 Things He Knows:
  • Owen has a super large vocabulary and it seems to grow by the day. People still frequently comment on how impressed they are with his talking.
  • Owen can easily count to 10 and into the teens.
  • Owen has learned some of the words to several songs. I will sometimes catch him singing a song and it will be one from the radio or from toddler time at the library even though he's only heard it once or twice.
  • He has many of his books memorized and will sit "reading" them to himself.
  • Owen can still recite his ABCs if he doesn't get distracted partway through.
  • He has learned to recognize all the letters of the alphabet.
  • He knows tons of colors and shapes.

Other Things I Want to Remember:
  • Owen is wearing mainly size 18-24 months and 24 months clothing still. And even some of those are big depending on the brand. He is a little guy!
  • Owen wears size 6.5 and size 7 shoes.
  • Owen is wearing size four diapers.
  • Owen has 16 teeth now. We have yet to see any signs of his two-year molars coming in, but we're fine waiting a while for those to make their appearance.
  • Owen loves when we read to him and looking at books by himself. His favorite books are anything with trucks, trains, or animals.
  • Owen loves playing with his Fisher Price Wheelies cars, his giant Lego-type blocks, his new stackable animal houses blocks, and his Thomas the Train trains.
  • Owen loves to watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Thomas and Friends. He gets to watch an episode a few times a week. He can now sing the entire theme song to Thomas and Friends. He was super thrilled when we bought him a Thomas the Train birthday cake.
  • Owen loves bathtime. He enjoys playing with his squirty Thomas the Train toys, his foam farm puzzle pieces and his tug boat.
  • Owen still enjoys playing outside and will cry pretty much every time we bring him back inside. Outside, he likes to be pushed around in his Lightning McQueen car, explore the yard, and draw with sidewalk chalk. Or more accurately, demand that I draw with his sidewalk chalk by handing me different pieces of it and saying. "Draw red!" Or "Draw blue!"
  • Owen has pretty much gotten over any separation anxiety he used to show at friend's houses and at church. He goes in happily now to play with Miss Daisy and Mr. Don.
  • Owen is a typical 2-year-old and his favorite word at the moment is "No." He says no to everything, even stuff that he actually wants. Like "Do you want a peanut butter sandwich?"... "No."
  • He also has gotten a big case of the "I wants...," particularly at stores. We are working on switching it to "I would like" and "please." Sometimes he will also throw in an "I need..." ie. "I need cake!"
  • Owen doesn't really understand that I am pregnant and that the baby is growing inside me and that he will have a brother. But if I ask him to kiss my belly or say "Hi Brother" to my stomach, he will do it and it's really cute.
Getting Owen to both look at the camera and smile is a feat now. Of course the only one I would get is with a background of our neighbors trashy yard and 8 million vehicles.
Oh well.

Waving hi to our neighbor who was mowing his lawn.

Owen is twenty-two months old!

Eating:
  • Owen eats three meals a day and an afternoon snack normally. But lately he has been super hungry and wants to snack pretty much nonstop. Growth spurt, maybe?
  • He still eats basically whatever we eat for meals.
  • Owen's favorite foods are yogurt, strawberries, grapes, soup, and peanut butter and honey sandwiches.
  • Owen drinks whole milk with each main meal and water in between. He is obsessed with juice and asks for it often, but we try to stick with water most of the time.
  • He tasted chocolate this month and has become a big fan. He frequently asks for chocolate.

Sleeping:
  • Owen naps in the afternoon and generally goes down just after lunch around 1 p.m and sleeps for between an hour and a half to two hours.
  • Owen goes to bed at night at 7:30 p.m.
  • He wakes up at around 8 a.m., sometimes earlier, sometimes later.
  • Owen's going to bed routine consists of a bath, pajamas, reading a few books, and then snuggling and rocking in the chair with either mommy or daddy for a few minutes before putting him in his crib.
  • We read Owen one Bible story a night out of his Jesus Storybook Bible and he loves to have us read his "Bible stories."
  • Owen has become attached to a small tiger stuffed animal that we bought at the Cincinnati Zoo and sleeps with it every night. He calls it Kitty Kitty.
  • Owen loves his new Twilight Turtle nightlight and talks about going to "see the stars" all the time. He is also really proud that he can turn it on himself and wants to show it off to anyone he can.
  • Owen has started telling us when he is sleepy and when we put him to bed afterwards, he generally falls asleep pretty quickly with just a little bit of crying.

Things He Knows:
  • Owen has a super large vocabulary and it seems to grow by the day. People frequently comment on how impressed they are with his talking.
  • Owen can count to 10. He has started being able to count into the teens. We are working on learning what numbers mean and teaching him how to count items instead of just rattling off the numbers he has memorized.
  • Owen has learned some of the words to several songs. He already knew "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and "Jesus Loves Me,"  "Old MacDonald Had A Farm," "Row Row Row Your Boat," "Hush Little Baby," and "Baa Baa Black Sheep." He has several others songs that he sings now, including The Animal Boogie song, "The Farmer in the Dale," and a made-up lullaby that I sing to him at night that my mom used to sing to me. It's very repetitive, but basically the words are about everyone who loves Owen through the night and I just go through our whole family. It's so sweet to catch him singing, "Papa (or whoever) loves Owen, all through the night."
  • He has many of his books memorized and will sit "reading" them to himself.
  • Owen can still recite his ABCs if he doesn't get distracted partway through.
  • He has learned to recognize several letters of the alphabet, in particular the letters of his name. He is constantly pointing out letters on shirts, food packaging, license plates, etc.

Other Things I Want to Remember:
  • Owen is wearing mainly size 18-24 months clothing.
  • Owen wears size 6 and 6.5 wide shoes, depending on the brand. His boots are size 7's and he can sometimes kick them off so he's not exactly into a 7 yet.
  • Owen is wears size four diapers.
  • Owen has 16 teeth now. All he's missing is his two-year molars, but we're fine waiting a while for those to make their appearance.
  • Owen loves when we read to him and looking at books by himself. His favorite books are anything with trucks or animals. He loves "Elusive Moose," "Goodnight Goodnight Construction Site," and "Chugga Chugga Choo Choo."
  • Owen loves to watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Thomas and Friends. He gets to watch an episode a few times a week.
  • Owen loves bathtime. He enjoys playing with his squirty Thomas the Train toys, his foam puzzle pieces and his tug boat. He generally gets upset when we go to take him out of the tub. But a game of towel Peekaboo generally helps.
  • Owen still enjoys playing outside and will cry pretty much every time we bring him back inside. It has been really cold lately so we haven't been outside as much as he would like.
  • Owen still displays a tiny bit of separation anxiety, but we can now report that he fusses more when we try to pick him up from church nursery than he does when we drop him off.
  • Owen loves cell phones and tablets and computers and if you have one out in his presence, he believes there is an unspoken invitation for him to come mess with it. He frequently walks around the house with my cell phone pretending to talk to people.

Owen is twenty-one months old!

We don't have a doctor's appointment this month, but according to our bathroom scale, Owen weighs around 26 pounds. I have no idea how tall he is, but we don't have to roll up his pants any more if that's a sign. Because it has been so cold outside, I haven't been able to go do an "official" photo shoot, but I have included in the post some pictures from the past week.

Eating:
  • Owen eats three meals a day and an afternoon snack normally.
  • He still eats basically whatever we eat unless we are having something super spicy. He has been eating really well for the most part, but we're still struggling a bit since Owen got spoiled with lots of Christmas treats at his respective grandparents' houses.
  • Owen's favorite foods are pizza, Cheddar bunnies, oatmeal, yogurt, peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, apples and pears.
  • Owen loves to "dip" his food, fingers, and pretty much anything else in ketchup or other sauces. He frequently asks to "dip it?"
  • Owen drinks whole milk with each main meal and water in between.
  • Owen adds the word dinner to whatever food he wants to eat, regardless of whether it is dinnertime. For instance, when you ask him what he wants to eat, he will sometimes say, "Hotdog dinner?" or "PopTart dinner?"

  • We read Owen a Bible story a night out of his Jesus Storybook Bible and he loves to have us read his "Bible stories."

Things He Knows:
  • Owen has a super large vocabulary and it seems to grow by the day. Sometimes he will say a word and Tim will look at me and say, "Did you teach him that?" and I'll say no and we have no idea where he learned it.
  • Owen can count to 10. He can even do it when we take turns filling in numbers for him.
  • Owen has learned some of the words to several songs. He already knew "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star" and "Jesus Loves Me." This past month, he learned "Old MacDonald Had A Farm," "Row Row Row Your Boat," "Hush Little Baby," and "Baa Baa Black Sheep."
  • He has many of his books memorized and will sit "reading" them to himself.
  • Owen learned to recite his ABCs this month.

Other Things I Want to Remember:
  • Owen is wearing mainly size 18-24 months clothing.
  • Owen wears size 6 and 6.5 wide shoes, depending on the brand. His boots are size 7's and without a couple pairs of socks, they still fall off his feet.
  • Owen is wears size four diapers.
  • Owen has 16 teeth completely in now.
  • Owen loves when we read to him and looking at books by himself. His favorite books are anything with trucks or animals. He really loves "Trucks Go," Taro Gomi's "My Friends," and his new Littles books by Amy Krouse Rosenthal. He also loves his Chugga Chugga Choo Choo book which he lost in the grocery store yesterday.
  • Owen loves to watch Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Thomas and Friends. He is especially into Thomas and has several toys and DVDs and even pajamas after Christmas.
  • Owen still displays some separation anxiety and fear in certain situations. He cries every time as soon as we pull into the church parking lot, but he calms down once he's in nursery and playing. After nursery, the workers always comment on how well he did and how smart he is.
  • Owen loves playing with cars and trucks and trains. He also really likes puzzles.
  • He loves to stand on things and try to climb things. So far he has not seriously injured himself.
